A handsome boy used to come to the girl‘s door
He brought her wildflowers and even more
He longed to marry her, be bride and groom
She did not want to be part of his doom

She sleeps in another’s bed to feel bliss
Where does her soul go when she sins like this?
The young man's heart’s aching bitterly now
But still he’s yearning to win her somehow

One evening he told her: „I beseech thee!“
„Thou art fair, my beloved, please marry me.“
„I shall not marry thee, thou had better drown”
„That's all that I have to say to thee now”

“Come and fight” the colonel’s drum called for war
The young boy readily to his fate swore
Thus he decided that he would enlist
To ease his heartache that still did persist

Hey! The mare tows the cart from the battlefield
Carrying bodies that will never heal
Hey! The blood flows down and into the streams

Uniform, helmet, a black leaden shell
Saber and musket, he was taught to wield

Fourteen years now that the soldier had served
His boyish love in his heart he preserved
And when the enemies unleashed their hell
The only battle cry was the death knell

Hey! ...

The soldier struck down, lies there in the mud
Saber and quilted coat covered in blood
They found him lying, and they patched him up
Then sent him home, could he be saved by love?

Outside the village, the military carts
Girl’s tears are dripping and pain in their hearts
The soldier commanded his soul to God
Before he laid his eyes on his beloved
